I’m new to LAK? What can I expect?

A busy week! We have a jam packed schedule of events. We encourage all new attendees to participate in as many sessions as possible to gain the all around experience. There are plenty of networking opportunities built in to the program so please take advantage of them. I’m not going to have a car while at LAK19, how should I get around Tempe?

While downtown Tempe is quite walkable, you may wish to use the Orbit, a free shuttle provided by the City of Tempe. For information, including routes, visit: https://www.tempe.gov/government/public-works/transportation/bus-light-rail-paratransit-streetcar.

If you are looking to explore the Valley, you may also wish to use the lightrail to visit downtown Phoenix or Mesa. Scottsdale, just north of campus, can best be accessed by rideshare.

LAK19 Organizers have also secured a discount code for Lyft. Download the Lyft app and use the following codes: LAKC for new users with $5.00 off the first 4 rides, and LAKC19 for existing Lyft users to get 10% off 2 rides.

In addition, many of the area hotels may offer shuttle service. Please check in with your individual hotels to see what might be available.

Conference Organizers have arranged for bus transportation from ASU at 5:30pm on Wednesday, March 6. Each return bus will make two stops, one in downtown Tempe close to most conference hotels and one near the ASU campus close to other hotels (the Graduate, Holiday Inn Express, etc.)

What’s new at LAK19?

Welcome breakfast for anyone attending their first LAK conference

It will take place in the main eating area in the Arizona Ballroom, just look for the reserved signs to mingle with others new to LAK and to meet some of the SoLAR Executive Committee!

Speed Mentoring Event

The Inclusion Working group, an extension of the SoLAR Executive led by Inclusion Chair, Shenita Ray, will be introducing a new Speed Mentoring Event. This event is intended to help students and early career researchers network and ask questions to Senior Faculty and Researchers in the field. This event will be available on a first come, first serve basis on Wednesday afternoon, 4:30pm in the Arizona Ballroom.

More display time for Posters & Demos

With the amount of posters and demos at LAK conferences, we felt that we needed to provide an additional forum for not only authors and presenters more time to display but for attendees to review the posters ahead of the Poster/Demo Session. This way both parties can have more meaningful interactions during the poster session. Poster & Demos will have the opportunity to display on Wednesday & Thursday (split evenly, half on Wednesday and half on Thursday) during the day in Senita B&C (where Sponsors are located and Coffee Breaks will take place). All posters and demos will be on display at the Poster and Demo reception on Thursday evening. Don’t forget to vote for the best poster and best demo awards! Voting will take place during the reception on Thursday Evening.
